Medicare is health insurance offered by the US government for individuals who are 65 years and older. Although the majority of Medicare beneficiaries are senior citizens, young people with disabilities and chronic kidney failure (those in need of dialysis or a transplant) can also qualify for Medicare health insurance plans.
Depending on the Medicare plan a beneficiary receives, Medicare can cover the costs of hospitalization, doctors’ fees, physical therapy, occupational therapy and more.
Medicare services are offered in 4 parts: Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D.
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)
Part A of Medicare covers the costs of hospitalization and skilled nursing facilities for a limited period of time. Beneficiaries of the Part A can pick be treated by any hospital/doctor that accepts Medicare payments.
Part B of Medicare pays for doctors’ visits and for services including wheelchairs, lab tests, walkers and even surgeries. This part also covers the cost of preventive care such as flu shots, mammograms and annual checkups.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
You will have to choose between Original Medicare and Part C – you can’t have both. Part C of Medicare is provided by private insurance companies. These usually provide additional services (vision care, hearing, prescription drugs) that are not covered by Original Medicare.
Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Part D of Medicare covers the cost of prescription drugs. Beneficiaries of Original Medicare will have to join a separate drug plan (offered by private companies). Some Medicare Advantage plans include drug plans.
