Senior citizens (aged 65 and above) along with people with disabilities or kidney failure can apply for government-funded health-insurance called Medicare.

Medicare consists of 4 main parts (Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D) that help cover the costs of hospitalization, hospice care, doctor visitations, prescription drugs and more.

To avoid late-enrollment penalty fees, senior citizens should file for Medicare at least 3 months before turning 65.

Medicare Plans offered in Virginia

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)

Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B of Medicare.

Part A covers all in-patient costs including hospitalization fees and hospice care. Part B of Medicare pays for physicians’ costs as well as some medical equipment and preventive care.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Beneficiaries will have to pick between Original Medicare and Medical Advantage as they can’t have both.

Medicare Advantage is provided by private health-insurance companies and offers all the benefits of Original Medicare including some extra services (usually vision and dental care). Some Medicare Advantage plans will even cover costs of prescription drugs.

Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

Part D of Medicare covers the cost of prescription drugs and usually works alongside Original Medicare.

Note that not Medicare Prescription Drug Plan is available in all counties in Virginia. Most states offer 10 standardized policies that are available in each county; they provide the exact same benefits regardless of where they are purchased.

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)

Medigap is offered to beneficiaries by private companies and covers some Original Medicare expenses as well as copayments, out-of-pocket expenses and deductibles.
