Medicare is government-funded health insurance for senior citizens aged 65 years and above, as well as people with disabilities and kidney failure.
Beneficiaries of Medicare in South Carolina have the choice of picking between Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and adding on optional plans or they can choose a Medicare Advantage plan offered by private companies.
Medicare coverage in South Carolina:
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)
Part A of Medicare covers all hospitalization costs while Part B covers everything all costs related to doctor visit and other medical services.
Medicare Advantage plans (Part C)
These plans are offered by private insurance companies. Medicare beneficiaries have to choose between Original Medicare and Medial Advantage – you can’t have both. Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything in Original Medicare (with the exception of hospice care) in addition to providing extra benefits such as vision and dental care costs. Some Medicare Advantage plans even cover prescription drugs.
It’s important to note that not all Medicare Advantage plans are offered across all counties of South Carolina; some may only cover select counties. Even when you choose Medicare Advantage plans, you will still have to pay the premiums of Part B of Medicare.
Prescription Drugs Coverage (Part D)
Part D of Medicare provides coverage of prescription drugs via private insurance companies. Beneficiaries can choose to add Part D to their Original Medicare coverage. People who choose Medicare Advantage can also add Part D to their plans if they include coverage of prescription drugs.
In case you don’t sign up for Medicare on time (3 months before turning 65 years), you will be asked to pay a late-enrollment penalty fee to add Part D to your Medicare plan.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)
This is optional insurance offered by private companies. It could cover some Original Medicare costs including deductibles, copayments and other out-of-pocket costs.
